Launched in 2001, the .NAME generic domain extension is the single TLD supposed to be for personal websites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are known by. Initially, only 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to purchase john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already bought third-level names remained functional.
